Karawitan has been along time voiced Indonesian traditional songs whether using vocal or instrumental media. Karawitan recently can be find in some areas of Indonesia like Java, Sumatra, Madura, and Bali. Karawitan players are playing gamelan as its musical instrument like Gamelan Pelog/Salendro, Gamelan Cirebon, Gamelan Degung and Gameran Cianjuran for ensemble serving.
Each of them has special characteristics as it influenced by each culture areas. Usually karawitan is accompanying traditional songs and dance but it is also standing by itself as instrumental show. Further remains Karawitan comprises to three kinds of karawitan, they are Karawitan Sekar, Karawitan Gending, and Karawitan Sekar Gending. Karawitan Sekar regards to one of art which emphasizing vocal element. In the other side Karawitan Gending means one of art show which prioritizing instrumental element. While Karawitan Sekar Gending features karawitan sekar and gending means using vocal and instrumental elements.
Karawitan Sekar again divides into sekar tandak or tandak song which tight by wiletan or bar like panambih songs of Sunda/Cianjuran recite, kawih Sunda songs or sinden songs, pupuh sekar tandak songs. It is also composed by Sekar Irama Merdika while it has not bar or wiletan like pupuh songs, Sunda/Cianjur songs. Karawitan Gending composed by any kinds of intruments in Classic Degung songs, Gending Wanda Anyar, Harp and flute instrument, gambangan, overture, and Gending Karatagan on wayang golek show. Gending Wanda Anyar itself created by H. Koko Koswara dan Nano, S. as a new composition of new gending.
